Speak Xhosa

Craig Charnock, as lead facilitator of UBuntu Bridge offers learning tools, classes, workshops and community tours to help adult learners in a corporate or organizational context become comfortable and confident in everyday conversational Xhosa, through
a mix of simplified and appropriate grammatical explanations, useful and important vocabulary and warm, engaging classes.

“The classes were presented in a pleasant and learning-friendly atmosphere where mistakes were welcomed as learning opportunities for all. Craig’s teaching style is warm and sincere. He was efficient, clear and professional in his approach, creating a real buzz in the office. It was wonderful to see everyone interacting and laughing, united in their common efforts and struggles.”

- Arlene Cloete, Snr Administrative Officer WCGRB -

“Highly recommended. The lessons are straightforward, well spelled-out, paced correctly and broad enough to cover the basics.”

- Linda Codron, Communications Manager at mothers2mothers -

From experience, I have learned that the following dynamics occur in the Corporate Context:
• People are busy
• Homework cannot always be done
• Class cannot always be attended

The way in which I have structured the modules and learning options for you is designed to negate these problems as is realistically possible and provide you with excellent service.

Beginners course consists of Module A and Module B:

Module A: Includes CD 1 and manual – 6 lessons*
Lesson 1: Pronunciation, reading the language and Greetings
Lesson 2: Introduction to Verbs and Prefixes
Lesson 3: Sentence Building Blocks and NB 1st Sentences
Lesson 4: Greetings, Names and Appropriate Titles
Lesson 5: Introductions and Pleasantries
Lesson 6: Integration Orals and extra lessons
Module B: Includes CD 2 and manual – 6 lessons*
Lesson 7: Negatives
Lesson 8: Past Tense and Negative Past Tense
Lesson 9: Asking questions
Lesson 10: Na as and / with / have
Lesson 11: Conversational Application for daily usage
Lesson 12: Integration Conversation Orals

"I have been to three Xhosa courses before, but for the first time did I learn how to construct sentences and hey, wena NDITHETHA NGOKU (I talk now!)"

- Philip J Oktober, a.k.a. Mzivukile -
- Chief Executive Officer, Machaira Group (PTY) LTD -

Module A and B
- The standard 12 lesson course
- This is for those people who are motivated and committed to learn Xhosa.

Cost: R900 - 1250 pp*
* Prices depend on the number of learners quoted for. Ideal class size is 10 - 12 learners. Distance traveled to premises may also effect the quote.

Module A only
- Just the one module lasts only 6 lessons (three weeks), does not demand too much, but leaves the learner with an excellent understanding of the basics, with a thorough knowledge and ability to greet, introduce oneself and others, as well as build basic sentences.
- This course is perfect for beginners and self-proclaimed “slow language learners”.
- They can always choose to do Module B later if they wish to continue. This keeps learners of a similar pace and commitment together, streamlining the learning process.

Cost: R500 - R700 pp*
* Again, quote will vary with number of learners.

Xhosa Team-building Workshops

Team-building Half-Day Workshops
- A further alternative is to have a Half-day Introductory Xhosa language Workshop of 3-5 hrs, in which we learn some key Xhosa basics taken from the modules.
- This is a fun, interactive activity from which the participants emerge with the ability to greet and introduce themselves in Xhosa with confidence.
- It provides indecisive or non-committed people with an opportunity to dip in to the language and to make an informed decision as to whether they wish to continue with proper lessons over a longer time. If not, they will at least be able to greet and introduce themselves, click competently and read the language.
- I introduce what is covered in the two modules, what I offer in terms of vision and direction for their learning and what I expect from the learners.
- Issues around language and culture, which affect comfort and confidence will be discussed and worked with.
- Everyone interested can attend and are presented with the 3 basic options above – to sign up for a module, or purchase the CDs and manuals.
- The team-building workshops are also available in the context of the community tour for a more integrated culture and language experience.

Cost: approx R220 pp*, R350pp with CD included (min of 10 people, max 20, 3-5 hours, optional traditional Xhosa lunch – R50 pp).

" Corporate's could be fostering good relations and team building by encouraging members of staff to converse with their colleagues in one of our national indigenous languages. Workshops can be run as short "getting started" courses, which are designed to help heal the wounds of our country and continent by fostering an attitude of respect, co-operation and understanding. Craig Charnock offers his guidance, motivation and support in learning to speak Xhosa with confidence. His classes are fun and engaging.”
